My Adventure to China

The Great Wall of China

Saturday, August 8, 2009

Today was the day that we have all been looking forward to! The group got to hike the Great Wall of China. An opportunity that I will never forget. It all started last night, my first camping trip. The bugs were swarming and the air was humid. We set up our tents pretty quickly (to my surprise). That night we wrote a rap for our amazing tour guide Riley (and preformed it...wonderfully). Many of us hit the sleeping bags early while other stayed up a little later. Either way we all had to wake up at 5:00. Once we were up the next day, our tour guide pointed to a nearby cliff and said "we will climb this" we all didn't want to believe it,but sadly he was being serious. The treck up the hill was probably the longest most painful treck of my life...at the time. Once at the top I felt a rush of success only to realize there were about 40 some more of these little hills.Great. The treck was painful and went through the forest (at one point we got lost in a corn field).however, walking on and climbing (literally.we scaled the wall at one point) the Great Wall of China was hands down, the greatest experience of my life. Nothing compares. It was everything I expected it to be and more

I can sense that you like to use humor in your writing - "we will climb this" and are honest about the difficulties you encountered but overcame. Keep posting! Karen Wells DSA South Africa

Isn't life wonderful when an experience exceeds the anticipation of it. You will probably reflect years from now on this trip and still find climbing the Great Wall and succeeding despite grueling pain a singular accomplishment in a lifetime of many.
